Imagine if...

  • we celebrated and explored mathematics through art, ethnic studies, music, or poetry?

  • we created spaces of mathematics built in community and love?

  • we redefined math learning through tinkering and play?

  • we cultivated our collective math identities so that all youth can see themselves as thinkers and doers of math?

I believe that teaching for social justice requires us to think beyond simply content—our pedagogy must also be deeply rooted in cultivating learning experiences that center joy and activate students' funds of knowledge. My experience in school classrooms and out-of-school teaching has given me opportunities to explore math through an interdisciplinary approach. If you walked into my classroom, you would see messy spaces of creation, hear students engaging in productive struggle through loud conversations, and moving freely while they decided what to make! You could find students making art, building robots, launching rockets, learning how to weave, or making beaded jewelry while we collectively worked to reshape our own math identities through the process

As a professional development designer and facilitator, I've also collaborated with hundreds of educators, supporting them to integrate culturally-sustaining, maker-centered learning into their spaces. I've seen the shift that happens when educators have opportunities for play and meaningful learning that does not often happen in "traditional" schooling. My hope is that we can co-create these spaces with students, shifting power to ensure they can lead their own learning.
