Cyber Arcade: Programming and Making with micro:bit

Cyber Arcade: Programming and Making with micro:bit is a fun and creative introduction to computer science and hands-on making for youth in elementary (ages 9–12) and middle (ages 12–14) grade levels with little to no experience in programming and 3D design.

Using a Micro:bit and MakeCode, young makers practice problem-solving and teamwork to create interactive arcade games. In this 10-week curriculum, makers have opportunities to develop knowledge in computer science, engineering, art, and game design, as well as gain exposure to real-world industry concepts and vocabulary.

This curriculum is featured on the MakeCode/micro:bit homepage under Courses and exists on Maker Ed’s Resource Library.

My Role:

I co-developed this curriculum with educator Sarah Chung. We worked with an external graphic designer and editor to create the final educator guides. I managed the overall project and partnership.

This curriculum was funded in collaboration with Oakland Unified School District and implemented in several after school programs. We designed and facilitated a series of professional development workshops to support after school educators and site leaders to prototype the projects with youth. We gathered their feedback to improve the curriculum before publishing.
